AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

Is
a world-wide movement of human rights defenders independent of
any government, political ideology, economic interest or
religion. Our principles include international solidarity,
effective action for the individual victim, global coverage, the
universality and indivisibility of human rights, impartiality
and independence, democracy and mutual respect.
There are over a million members in over 140 countries, who aim
to promote human rights for all and take part in campaigns and
actions based on Amnesty International's mission to undertake
research and action focused on preventing and ending grave
abuses of the rights to (1) Physical and Mental Integrity (2)
Freedom of Conscience and Expression and (3) Freedom from
discrimination.
People can take part in Amnesty International UK Section's work
in a variety of ways:
Membership:
As an individual member.
· Urgent
Action Network: This involves swift response to cases of people
in immediate danger of death, torture or other cruel
treatment or who have disappeared. You choose how many actions
and can designate issues and or areas of the world.
· Local
Groups: There are about 340 local groups throughout the UK
working in a variety of ways on AI's major campaigns and on
actions on specific countries or on behalf of individual cases.
· Affiliated
Groups in schools, colleges and universities, workplaces, youth
clubs, church and other religious groups.
· Networks
based on skills and interests such as lawyers, teachers, nurses,
trade unionists, artists and many more.
